He studied at Vincennes University and Indiana State University, earning a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education and minoring in art. It was in those art classes, forty-three years ago, at Indiana State where he met his wife, artist Jo Anne Perigo Fiscus.Bruce taught in the Vigo County School Corporation for 36 years, in elementary schools and as a middle school math teacher, and retired from teaching in 2010. Although primarily a ceramicist, Bruce has recently begun dabbling in metal sculpture. His first efforts into the medium netted him three awards in the 2014 Wabash Valley Art Guild Spring Art Show, a first place and two honorable mentions. He is a member of the Wabash Valley Art Guild, the River City Art Association, a member of the artist collective Watermark, past board member of Arts Illiana. Bruce keeps a studio in the Collett Park area of Terre Haute.
“I remember my early life as being surrounded by creative people. Both my mother and father loved to dabble, Mom in oil painting and Dad in wood carving. I was encouraged to try my hand in art making. Later, in college I met my wife in art classes and again, surrounded myself with the spirit of creativity. I love to work in ceramics and other three-dimensional media. Most recently, Jo Anne and I have discovered welding and have taken classes in outdoor sculpture through the Community Arts program at Indiana State University. I enjoy the process of making as much as the outcome and when I enter the studio I lose track of all time. “
