Karla & Michael Ries

My process starts by just enjoying life around me – this can be as simple as discovering the powerful beauty of a single flower, being captivated by the wonder of a giraffe on a Disney “safari” or being inspired by a barn and passing storm . Where ever my husband and I travel we’re sure to have our cameras at the ready, capturing digitally whatever catches our eye to use as a future art reference. Once I’ve selected my subject matter, I transfer that image onto paper or canvas depending upon my medium of choice (watercolor, acrylic, oil, or pastel). The drawing is the tedious part for me – I can’t wait to get past that stage and start applying color. Each medium has its own challenges but I’m learning something every time I pick up a brush.

I am blessed to have married a man who shares my love of all things art and I truly think that art has enriched my life. I hope my work pays respect to these blessings and I hope you enjoy it.
The Artistic Statement of Michael Ries
“Art is what you can get away with.” Andy Warhol
As an artist I find a lot of comfort in that quote, because as an artist I am my own worst enemy, my own worst critic. I never used to give myself a break, that is until I met my wife, Karla.
Karla has taught me how to accept my work and to understand that art is what it is. She showed me how to enjoy the success and the failures in my art and how to have fun with the process and for that I am eternally grateful.
I am a professional graphic artist, so my work tends to be more illustrative. I love Science Fiction, so I gravitate toward art with space ships set in the heavens soaring past ringed planets on fantastic adventures. I am a long-time amateur photographer, so I love to view life through the lens.
In my more romantic moments, I believe that in some respect we are all artists in our own ways, some paint, some draw, some cook, some build bridges and buildings but we are all artists and with that we all "get away" with a certain amount in our art. I hope you like my offerings.
