I also admire Scott Payne’s work, especially his subtle palette and his seemingly effortless technique. I also admire the work of other artists. I find that I frequently revisit the drawings of J.S. Sargent, Gustav Klimt, Kathe Kollwitz, and Susan Lyons. Often when I struggle with issues of composition, line, and color, I revisit the work of Liu Yamine, David Wells, Elizabeth Murray, Euan Uglow, Tamara de Limpicka, and Egon Schiele. I also admire the complicated simplicity of illustrations by Lucle Gayot and Malika Farve. Finally, I sincerely thank Jo Rich-Vadas for this opportunity, for her suggestions and encouragement through the years, and for her willingness to offer thoughtful, unvarnished criticism of my work.
